Hyundai recently introduced a new technology called Active Air Skirt. Aimed at increasing EV performance, this technology enhances aerodynamics which leads to an increase in driving range and overall performance. Hyundai has been steadily implementing new technology into its EVs. The latest project involved integrated chain technology which helps EVs combat harsh winter conditions. The South Korean automaker has made significant strides with its EVs compared to other automakers. The latest Ioniq 5N is set to be the automaker’s most powerful EV yet. New driver connectivity services are also being made available. For now, we’ll take a closer look at Hyundai’s Active Air Skirt technology and see what consumers can expect.

Hyundai Unveils New EV Technology

Hyundai recently introduced its Active Air Skirt (AAS) technology for its EVs. This new technology was designed to improve the aerodynamics and performance of EVs. AAS works by minimizing wind resistance at higher speeds. This provides EVs with better control and handling. It also leads to increases in driving range and overall performance.

In designing its AAS technology, Hyundai installed the feature between its EV’s front bumper and front wheels. Incorporated this way, the technology can control airflow to the lower part of the bumper adjusting when air resistance is greater than the rolling resistance. Hyundai designed the feature so that it only works when the vehicle is traveling over 50 mph. The AAS was also made durable enough to withstand speeds over 124 mph thanks to its rubber material. Below speeds of 43 mph, the technology will remain obscured emerging only when necessary.

Hyundai is aiming to dominate the EV market. Many automakers are pursuing EVs but it seems that the South Korean automaker is leading the charge with its ingenuity. As more automakers produce EVs, ingenuity will continue to become a priority. While Hyundai has already applied for a patent for its new AAS technology, the technology is still being tested. In testing its new technology, Hyundai saw a 2.8% improvement in drag reduction. This equated to almost 4 miles of additional battery range. According to Hyundai, its AAS technology will play a more beneficial role for EV SUVs and trucks more than sedans due to their larger stature. Given the pace at which Hyundai is developing technology, its grip on the EV market will grow even larger. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more information.
